The electronic DNI is in danger: what has happened to you and how does it affect you?

If you have an electronic ID you should know that you may be in danger: this is the risk that the Government is assuming in Spain.

The electronic DNI came to our lives as a real wonder: it consisted of a chip that allowed access to all our information and that, in one way or another, was going to make life easier in an amazing way. Orwellian Conpiranoias apart, the truth is that this device seemed a very good way to take our identity over beyond the document with which we had told all our lives.

However, everything changed last week and now the Spanish electronic DNI is in serious security problems. But what exactly happened? What is the reason for this failure? Does it affect me too? And, above all, is there a way to solve it?

It all started on the 1st of February. It was then when a group of researchers from the Masaryk University, in Brno (Czech Republic), discovered that the security chip of the Spanish electronic DNI was everything ... less safe. It suffered several cybersecurity failures that, at a given moment, opened the possibility that someone with bad intentions would access the public and private data of the bearers of said document.

From the Czech university they contacted Ifineon, the company that is in charge of the development and security of the electronic DNI in our country. Once the appropriate checks were made, the company came to the same conclusion: the chips of some documents had serious security flaws.

The matter was not exactly banal. A properly trained hacker (and with enough bad grapes, let's be clear) could access a person's document, impersonate him and carry out several actions that could endanger a large part of his data and his cybersecurity in just a moment .

What has the Government done?

After revealing this information, the Spanish Government has taken action on the matter: last week decided to deactivate the digital certificate of all electronic IDs issued in our country as of 2015. In case you do not know, the digital certificate is the tool that It allows you to use the DNI to carry out various administrative, mercantile and other private matters.

What does all this mean? That if you did your DNI from then on, your document will continue working without problems and you will continue using it without major altercations. Now, you must know that the digital certificate of your chip is no longer useful, so if at some point you thought to use it, forget it: until you change it, it will not start working.

If you check the date of issue of your ID and discover that you are one of those affected, get down to work: renew your document to have a new one and have the digital certificate tool again.

Now, you will not have it as easy as it seems: last Friday the National Police announced that the chips will be replaced to be useful again, but the thing will take time. At the moment there is no definite date announced, with what you will have to wait. If you want to keep up, go with some regularity to an office issuing DNIs: they will be the ones who can inform you of the next steps to follow.
