Why you should think twice about buying an iPhone X

The iPhone X is much more expensive, the screen is smaller in practice, the retina scanner failed the presentation and OLED screen will raise the price of warranty and repairs. Is it really worth more than an iPhone 8 Plus?

In the 'keynote' last September Apple managers decided to get on the air with three new phones in the pocket: the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus continuos and the iPhone X, the most innovative smartphone that has the logo the apple bitten in recent times. What we do not know is if they were aware of the effect that the second would have on the sales of the first two.

According to data from US operators and early research, the old models of iPhone 7, which have been lowered in price, are selling better than the successors that went on sale in October. In fact, the iPhone 8 and its older brother have snatched the iPhone 6S the dubious honor of being Apple's terminals with less welcome after its launch.

The clip that the downgraded previous versions and the expected flagship of 2017 are exercising on the iPhone 8 and its variant Plus could be, however, a real problem for the Cupertino, who seem to have problems of 'stock' facing the market to your future bet. It has come to talk about delays, although for the moment on 3 November is still the day marked with a red circle in the calendars of all the 'fanboys'.

However, if you are thinking of changing smartphones and want one of the new terminals in the block, there are many reasons why you should think twice about what to buy. The innovations that have introduced in the iPhone X are undoubtedly the main claim in their favor, but also a reason enough to ponder whether it is worth making such a huge outlay for a device that has still much to prove.

Farewell to the 'Home' button

The first question is how they will handle users of an Apple smartphone in the absence of the classic Home button, having to resort to gestures to those who are not accustomed to do something as basic as returning to the main screen.

While it is true that the company has opted for its elimination to make room for a borderless screen that counts among the main attractions of the phone, there is still no reason to think that the move will do well. Most likely, people will adapt, as they were supposed to do after the disappearance of the minijack, but that does not have to mean that they are going to prefer the new method.

Size does matter

It seems to have installed the misleading belief that the iPhone X is going to have a screen larger than the iPhone 8 Plus with a size similar to the iPhone 8. If we just look at the inches is true: the second has 5.5 and the first 5,8, and also comes out favored if the resolution is compared.

However, there is another factor to consider: the aspect ratio, which makes the time of truth on the screen of the iPhone X fit less information than in the iPhone 8 (without even having in counts the space occupied by the front camera and the sensors).

This will be one of the battlehorses of developers who want to adapt their apps to the new flagship apple bite. It will not be easy or fast. Apple's new design guidelines are going to force many to rethink their interfaces, opening a phase of transition in which there will probably be uncertainties, discrepancies and inconveniences from trial and error.

The leap to OLED technology

The iPhone X is the first 'smartphone' Apple that will have an OLED screen, which however is already common in devices from other manufacturers. Although it is a change that should not cause problems, the truth is that it does come with a catch that some potential buyers might not know: the price of the extended warranty AppleCare + is going to increase. Thus, replacing a broken screen in a repair shop will also be, predictably, more expensive.

So, if you drop your phone by an accidental crash with another passerby will give more fear than ever. And not only because it is a luxury item whose screen also costs an outrage, but also because the iPhone X has a rear that is also glass instead of the typical aluminum to favor wireless charging (which, yes, is common to iPhone 8).

It is a logical step that many other manufacturers have given, but it is another detail to take into account when deciding to go through the box. How will the iPhone X be tough? We still have no answer.

Your face is familiar to me

Rumors have it that Apple has tried until the last moment to save the fingerprint reader of his previous iPhone by placing it under the screen. We can not know if it is true or not, but it is known that it has not finally done so: the Touch ID has been replaced in the iPhone X by a new facial recognition system that failed in its own presentation, despite the meticulous planning with which Apple addresses its events.

Beyond the debate on the privacy and security of biometric identification mechanisms, the truth is that unblocking the phone or authorizing a payment through a selfie is something that we are not used to. It could be more cumbersome than laying your finger on the Home button, which was all that the previous models required.

It may be a giant leap into the future, but for the moment the doubts are about this functionality that Apple might have been forced to incorporate to make room for the borderless screen.

A difficult price to justify

Going beyond the barrier of the 1,000 euros as entry price does not seem to have diminished the expectation, as the iPhone X has relegated to the second plane to his traveling companion, the iPhone 8. However, beyond the first wave of buyers who always go hunting for novelty, will a price double that of other terminals with excellent performance?

Moreover, when the first opinions and experiences of use arrive and are answered the questions that we have raised, will it still be an object of desire capable of compensating the figure that it carries in its label?

So the things, and with all the doubts narrated ... have you considered if you compensate more the iPhone 8 Plus? Or even bet on the iPhone 7 Plus, which has gone down in price, and wait for a new version of the iPhone X comes out next year with all the news seated?

Right now buying the flagship is almost blind buying. One thing is the best iPhone of the present (the 8 Plus) and another the future bet (the iPhone X) that might not go quite well. Give it a couple of laps before you get in the queue of an Apple Store.

But if you're convinced, we will not be the ones to take the illusion: forward, that the iPhone X is Apple's most innovative phone in a long time. There is no doubt about that. Of everything else already ...
