We tested the Huawei Mate 10 and its brushstrokes of artificial intelligence

At the moment the things that the Huawei Mate 10 can do with its NPU chip, artificial intelligence, are counted on the fingers. But the camera is benefited, as well as the translation without Internet connection.

The Huawei Mate 10, the new high-end of the Chinese company, has raised artificial intelligence as a marketing banner. The truth is that for the moment is not a factor that has a great impact on the performance of the terminal, at least at first glance. But the usefulness of the NPU chip (neural processing unit) that incorporates the new phone is observed in some aspects, especially in the camera.

As for the terminal itself, its 5.9-inch screen, with a resolution of 2560x1440, has a high quality. Although at first the more square format (16: 9) is somewhat shocking, the type of screen is very suitable for watching videos. Although, despite having very tight frames, the smartphone is too big to handle with one hand.

The Mate 10, which costs 699 euros, works with eight cores, 4 GB of RAM and has a capacity of 64 GB. The fingerprint sensor is in the front, so you can comfortably use the big toe to unlock the terminal. This button can also be used, with a few simple gestures, as a substitute for virtual buttons, located at the bottom of the screen, so that they can be hidden leaving more free space.

The Kirin 970 is the chip that Huawei has incorporated into Mate 10. The advantage of the Chinese company is that it designs the processor itself, so it can not do it more tailored to their interests. In this case, he has put a CPU, a GPU -to process graphics- in the same phone and, the novelty with respect to other smartphones, his NPU.

In this NPU resides the artificial intelligence that Huawei has attributed to the terminal when presenting it to the public. It is a chip that can perform some tasks faster than a CPU or a GPU. And it also does it by optimizing resources to consume less battery. So far the theoretical part.

In Mate 10, artificial intelligence is especially noticeable in the camera. By the way in this section the smartphone has taken a leap over previous Huawei models. The opening of the two sensors - the double rear camera is positioned vertically in this series, as opposed to the horizontal distribution of the P-models is F1.6. This allows to capture a large amount of light in conditions that are not optimal. The two rear sensors, developed with Leica, have 20 megapixels the monochrome and 12 megapixels, the RGB.

The Mate 10 camera aims to be for all levels of photography. The software tries to serve both the most expert users and the least interested ones. Until now there were professional options that allow modifying parameters such as ISO, speed or exposure value. This helps to take better pictures of those who know how to handle these variables. For laymen in the field, Huawei has resorted to artificial intelligence.

The AI Vision Engine is an application built into the camera software, which detects what you are focusing on. He is able to know if you are going to take a picture of a plant, a person, a plate of food or a text. There are 14 different scenarios that the terminal recognizes, pointing them in one of the lower corners with an icon. In this way, once it identifies the object that is in front of the lens, it automatically adjusts the parameters of the camera so that the photo looks as good as possible. If the image is of food it gives the sensation that it increases the light and the saturation of the color.

The software is able, for example, to recognize a plant, even if it is made of plastic. The identification is practically instantaneous and works without an Internet connection. It does so thanks to the NPU chip of Mate 10. It is a way for a user not very experienced with photography to obtain good results when photographing very different scenes from each other.

Another expression of artificial intelligence is 'Translator', an application developed exclusively by Microsoft to work with the Huawei NPU. The software allows you to translate the voice automatically into another language. And for text translation, it works without an Internet connection, after downloading the corresponding language pack. It also allows you to take a picture of a text to translate it below. The software is capable of moving a large amount of resources and in the end a reliable platform is obtained, similar to that presented by Google with its own translator.

The version of the operating system is EMUI 8.0, the modification of Huawei, which in this case is equated with the nomenclature of Android Oreo, 8.0. It is an austere interface, very clean, one can almost say that of Chinese inspiration.

The battery is huge, 4000 mAh, and allows a whole day of intense use. While for a medium use of the terminal, a full load can hold two days. In this field, one of the most careful Huawei, it should be noted that the quick charge allows you to plug the phone only half an hour to then use it throughout the day.
